From the Lower East Side of New York City. LowerEastSalsa was founded in 2008 by “Tommy” Fernandez and Hector “Papote” Jimenez.
From a young age the musical influences and hardcore sound of salsa resonated with the two. “Tommy” followed in the footsteps of his uncle Ray Alcantara who played timbales for the 70’s group form the Lower East Side “SAOCO” among many other bands. After studying percussion at Boy Harbor in El Barrio under famed timbalero Jimmy Delgado, “Tommy” continued to play with many other groups in and around New York City.
Hector “Papote” Jimenez has the soul of a “Sonero”. Famed Puerto Rican journalist Jaime Torres Torres named “Papote” as one of the young soneros to watch in 2009. Having recorded as lead vocalist with Zon Del Barrio, Chino Nunez, Gilberto “Pulpo” Colon, and background vocals with N’KLABE and Our Latin Thing.
In 2010 LowerEastSalsa released two singles titled “Pideme” and “Baldito Caneca”. Those tunes had the likes of Tito Allen and Aris Martinez on chorus, Dr. Chris Washburne on Trombone, Winton Marsalis’ musical director Carlos Henriquez on bass and Papo Pepin and Tommy Fernandez and Jose “Papo el Tuko” DeLeon on percussion. The latter of the two was written by Fernandez. The strength of the group lies in it’s LIVE performances where they get thing HOT!!! Having shared the stage with such luminaries such as Gilberto Santa Rosa, Victor Manuelle and many more… This Group holds their own.
Recently releasing the sizzling hot single “Luz Del Cielo” that has garnered high praise. Recorded at Jual Music in Puerto Rico (Julio Alvarado & Eliut Cintron on trumpets & trombones), GML Recording Studios in Miami (Guianko “Yanko” Gomez on background vocals and improvisations) & Allerton Studios (Marcos “Ito” Arguinzoni on percussion & Adan Perez on Piano)in the Bronx, NY. Slated for a 2012 debut full-length release, only great things are on the horizon. LowerEastSalsa is not just a band….It’s an experience.
